Monica's Poetry & Musical Montage!

Monica Shuman will be presenting another Poetry & Musical Montage on Saturday, November 19th  from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 .p.m. in the Main Lounge of the church and you are all invited to hear beautiful music and some fun and meaningful readings and poems.

You will recognize the names of some of the performers, such as Randy Hoffmeyer and Gretchen Orsland, John Morse, and members of the Total Experience Gospel Choir.  This is a benefit for the Borto Orphanage and School in Liberia, South Africa, that Monica and SODA support, so a donation of $10.00 (or whatever you would like to give) or $15.00 spent at the SODA Shop table is suggested.

 Save the date!

Movie Night! The Secret Of The Kells

MOVIE NIGHT:  The Secret of the Kells

The story is set in the seventh century and gives a fictionalized account of the creation of the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin.  Follow 12-year-old Brendan (voice of Evan McGuire) as he battles Vikings and confronts an ancient serpent god on a mission to locate a legendary crystal and complete the mythical Book of Kells.

The Children and Youth Mission Team is co-sponsoring this showing with the Fellowship Mission Team this Sunday (Nov. 20th) in the Lower Lounge.  We will have a shared soup supper and watch the FULL length movie THE SECRET OF THE KELLS.   This event is open to youth, their families, and the larger congregation and friends.

We will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Lower Lounge with the soup so we can be done by 8:00 p.m. because it is a school night.

Supper provided ~ a simple pot of soup and accompaniments

Film Showing: For the Bible Tells Me So

Celebrate pride week with us.  Come watch For the Bible Tells Me So.

When: Friday evening, June 24th at 7:00 pm in the University Christian Church lounge.

Sponsored by: University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), University District Ecumenical Parish, University Congregational UCC, Emerald City MCC, and University Baptist Church

About the Film: Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in thecrosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

Sacred Grounds: Coffee and Poetry in the Month of May with U Baptist & U Christian

Coffee and Poetry, a gathering, hosted by both University Baptist and University Christian, begins this Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 am and will continue throughout the month of May.  We will meet in the University Christian Church library and coffee and tasty pastries will be provided.

What should I bring (you might ask)?

1) yourself and your love for people, coffee and pastries, and beautiful words.

2) bring a poem or two, or some other form of written word that speaks to who you are and your faith journey, maybe something that means a lot in your life.  Other than poems you might consider song lyrics, a prayer, or a short piece of prose.

3) a willingness to share and ask questions.   There is certainly no pressure to share a poem and listeners are welcome.  Our hope is that those who bring a piece of writing will be open to sharing why it speaks to them, maybe an experience it is related to or how it relates to their faith journey, understanding of God, etc..and then those listening will be able to ask questions and engage in good conversation.
