Our Approach to Religious Education
The Children and Youth Education Program at University Christian Church is committed to a well-rounded approach to religious education through:

Learning Our Story
We believe that knowledge of biblical themes and stories plays a central role in the development of faith in children. At University Christian Church we explore the scriptures in kid-friendly ways through the use of drama, music, art, video, and published curriculum.

Questioning and Reflection
Children at University Christian Church learn that the ancient scriptures are the written testimony of real people like them—men and women living in particular times, places, and circumstances. The way the ancient peoples thought about things, the way they lived, their culture, their social and political institutions, were much different than ours today. We believe that the Bible must be studied and interpreted. At University Christian Church children are challenged to explore the scriptures and encouraged to ask questions, to reflect on who God is, on who they are and their relationship to God and to one another.

We teach our kids early on to look at Jesus in order to know what God is like. In the life of Jesus our children and youth discover a God of love and compassion, of justice and mercy who cares for each of them as if he or she was God’s only child and all of them as precious members of the human family rich and diverse in color, faith, and tradition.

Living Faithfully
Growing as young Christians, children at University Christian Church learn that, as members of the human family, they are integrally connected with the world’s people and its environment. Here they learn and see modeled the joy of sharing with one another their personal gifts as well as well as sharing the resources God has entrusted to them.

Children are invited and encouraged to participate in service activities including collecting food for the local food bank, collecting school supplies for low-income children and other hands-on outreach projects.

Growing in Community
We believe it is important that children have opportunities to build community through play and fun activities. A variety of activities are offered beyond Sunday morning. These may include combined events with other University District churches, field trips and seasonal activities. All activities are chaperoned by parents and volunteers who have been screened and cleared to work with children and youth.
